Controversy Surrounds Airbnb’s Gladiator Battles Proposal in Rome

Airbnb intends to host gladiator battles in the iconic Colosseum in Rome, allowing selected guests to participate in mock fights while dressed as gladiators. This event, rooted in a partnership with the Colosseum Archaeological Park, comes nearly 2,000 years after gladiator contests last occurred at the historic site. Set for May 2025, it will feature 16 participants plus their guests, coinciding with the promotion of the upcoming film “Gladiator II.”

A press release from Airbnb promotes the event, highlighting the Colosseum’s historical significance as a venue for epic battles. The initiative aims to resurrect the arena’s original purpose and allow guests to create their own narratives as if they were gladiators of ancient Rome. However, attendees will not be allowed to stay overnight in the Colosseum and must arrange their own travel.

Alfonsina Russo, the director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, asserts that the event budget of $1.5 million is intended to enhance the site’s cultural heritage and respect its historical significance. Despite this, backlash is mounting from local officials concerned about the potential commodification of Rome’s rich history.

Massimiliano Smeriglio, Rome’s culture councillor, expressed opposition, warning of the negative effects of hyper-tourism that may turn historic sites into mere tourist attractions. He emphasized that the Colosseum must preserve its dignity as a cultural symbol. Enzo Foschi, another Rome city councillor, criticized Airbnb’s initiative as a mere publicity stunt, reinforcing their stance that Rome is no amusement park.

The backlash underscores a broader trend across European cities facing the pressures of mass tourism. Cities like Barcelona and Lisbon have implemented strict regulations on short-term rentals. With growing resentment towards the impact of tourism on local economies and affordable housing, the situation in Rome reflects these ongoing global discussions.

Lawmakers such as Smeriglio continue to advocate for the preservation of cultural identity as Airbnb and similar companies face increasing scrutiny and criticism. Protests erupt across Europe as citizens seek to reclaim their cities from becoming overly commercialized playgrounds for tourists.

Airbnb’s proposal to host gladiator battles in the Colosseum has sparked significant criticism from local lawmakers in Rome. While the initiative aims to enhance cultural heritage, officials are concerned about the commodification of historic sites. This controversy reflects ongoing issues with mass tourism, prompting cities to consider stricter regulations to protect their cultural identity.
