The exhibition titled “Il tempo del Futurismo” opens to the public at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome from December 3 to February 28, 2025. Curated by Gabriele Simongini and supported by the Ministry of Culture, this exhibition celebrates the 80th anniversary of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s death. The Ministry invested 1.5 million euros and collaborated with several private sponsors.
The exhibition analyzes the evolution of Futurism and its links to science and technology, showcasing 350 works, including pieces from the museum’s collection and notable loans from various national and international institutions. The exhibition’s intent is to highlight Futurism’s dynamic view of time and its impact on modern life.
Massimo Osanna, the Ministry of Culture Director General, emphasized the significance of the museum’s collections in crafting a cohesive narrative for the exhibition, which includes contributions from 70 lenders across archives and libraries. Renata Cristina Mazzantini, the director of GNAM, remarked on the collaborative effort behind the exhibition, which showcases the Ministry’s ability to produce high-quality displays without relying on external agencies.
Futurism, originating from Marinetti’s 1909 manifesto, revolutionized not only art but also societal perspectives, endorsing speed, movement, and technology. The exhibition intends to delve into how these concepts manifest through various artistic media, including painting, literature, film, and music.
Minister Alessandro Giuli acknowledged the pivotal role of Futurism in contemporary culture, describing the exhibition as a comprehensive showcase that reflects modern societal dynamics. He invited visitors to appreciate the exhibition’s scale and depth.
Significantly, the exhibition examines the synergy between art and technology, showcasing how Futurist artists depicted and recreated the world around them, influenced by scientific advancements and transportation innovations. Two multisensory installations will invite reflections on humanity’s place in an automated society, fostering a dialogue about past and future technological challenges.
Federico Mollicone noted Futurism’s global influence as a paradigm for modern avant-gardes, showcasing how its proponents anticipated contemporary societal inquiries and experiences. The exhibition comprises a vast array of artworks, including iconic pieces by prominent Futurists and objects relevant to scientific and technological advancements.
Curator Gabriele Simongini pointed out that despite housing an extensive collection, the quality of the exhibition speaks for itself. He compared it favorably with leading international exhibitions, citing the unique inclusion of Marinetti’s original voice.
The exhibition also features innovative graphic arts and typography, highlighting how Futurism reshaped visual communication. Finalized through partnerships with international cultural institutions, one-third of the exhibition is drawn from the National Gallery, showcasing works often kept in storage.
Ticket prices are set at €10.00, rising to €15.00 after December 3, 2024, with a reduced ticket option at €2.00. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, with special holiday hours and closures announced.
